A new traffic management system is being used to allow roadworks in Peterborough city centre to progress the council has revealed today, but it’s causing long delays for motorists.

And drivers can expect more of the same tomorrow, Thursday March 9, as works on Bishop’s Road continue.

A Peterborough City Council spokesman said: “Every effort is being made to keep traffic flowing during the Bishop’s Road improvement works but a traffic management system using one lane has been in place today. This was to enable cabling to be laid for the planned new pedestrian crossing.

“This is a short-term measure that was in place today during non-peak hours (9.30am to 3.30pm).

“This is likely to be the case again tomorrow but following this we are planning for the majority of lane closures to be carried out overnight.”

Motorists today faced “gridlock” with queues backing up along Bourges Boulevard, over the Queensgate roundabout and over Crescent Bridge.

The roadworks are all part of a £1.3million upgrade to Bishop’s Road details of which can be found here.
