The woman’s Vauxhall Corsa rolled over in the crash, which happened as a number of people were visiting the cemetery on Mother’s Day.

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service said they had been unable to send an ambulance to the scene until 5.25pm due to heavy demand for the service.

The spokesman said: “We received a call at 3.08pm on Sunday to a road traffic collision in Broadway, Farcet.

“The call was coded as a non life-threatening incident to a report of a woman with neck and leg pain. Due to unprecedented demand on Sunday and a high volume of life-threatening calls, we were not able to dispatch a clinician until 5.25pm.

“A paramedic in a rapid response vehicle attended to discover that the patient had been taken to hospital by police.

“We would like to apologise to the patient for any distress caused and would urge them to get in touch if they have any further questions or concerns so that we can fully investigate.”

The spokesman said Sunday had been the busiest day for the service of the year, receiving 111 calls in the Peterborough area alone, and thousands across the east of the country.

More than half the calls had been classed as ‘life threatening calls.’

A Cambridgeshire police spokesman confirmed officers took the woman to Peterborough City Hospital.

He said there was an arrangement between the police and ambulance service that said people could be taken to hospital by officers in certain circumstances.
