New Bishop's Road works to see extra lanes and crossings

Work are due to begin on Monday, February 27 and will last until the autumn with lane and road closures planned.

The works will extend south along Bishop’s Road to the entrance of the Wirrina car park, from the mini roundabout at the junction of Bishop’s Road and Vineyard Road up to the Rivergate roundabout.

The scheme includes:

• Relocating the current signal crossing around 65 metres further east. This is to help alleviate congestion at the Rivergate roundabout

• Creating two eastbound lanes east of the signal crossing to provide a dedicated right turn lane to the ​Bishop’s Road​ car park

• Widening the footway to the north side of Bishop’s Road and designate it for shared use for both pedestrians and cyclists

• Installing new LED lighting

• Improving pedestrian footways and crossing points at the Vineyard Road, Bishop’s Road and Gravel Walk roundabout

This will be the third phase in the wider Bishop’s Road project.

Councillor Peter Hiller, Peterborough City Council cabinet member for growth, planning and housing development, said: “To accommodate the growth of the city it is important to continue to invest in improvements to our road and other transport networks.

“We know that peak travel times currently create congestion at the Rivergate roundabout, partly through vehicles queuing on Bishop’s Road at the crossing. There is further road congestion that arises from westbound traffic waiting to turn into the Bishop’s Road car park.

“These works will alleviate these problems and make it a better area to use for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, and are part of extensive regeneration and improvements in the city centre.”

To ensure the Bishop’s Road car park remains open during the works a temporary access will be constructed to the east of the existing entrance. Temporary lining and signs will also be used within the car park to ensure users of the car park are informed of the temporary arrangement.

There will be single lane closures and traffic management in place throughout the works. A full night time road closure for re-surfacing will be in place during the final two weeks of the project in autumn 2017.

Bus users are advised the bus stops outside the Lido will be closed for the duration of the works. Appropriate signage will be in place to direct passengers to the bus stops on Bourges Boulevard close to TK Maxx.

The first two completed phases of the project were improvements to the footway and cycleway through the Lido gardens, and improvements to the footway and cycleway from St Peter’s Road to the existing pedestrian crossing point.

The phase three works are entirely funded by a £1.3 million grant awarded by the Greater Cambridge Greater Peterborough Local Enterprise.
