Traditional look and taste of Lithuania - in Peterborough

A restaurant chain that will be very well known to Peterborough's large Lithuanian community opened its doors to diners last week.

The sign at the front of what used to be Royal Spice for many years in Park Road says Shepherd’s Inn, which is a loose translation of “Berneliu Uzeiga” - something like “friends inn”.

The owners - it is a franchise and they opened one in London four years ago - have definitely gone for a traditional look, starting with the waitresses outfits.

The interior is very rustic, there is a lot of wood on show, and it’s a little quirky – there’s an owl sitting in a tree as you walk in (not a real one admittedly) and on the landing a scene depicting a moonshiner with his still.

As you enter through a false wooden front, diners are seated in little booths with big wooden tables and benches to sit on.

The mezzanine first floor is decked out similarly, and there is a small play area for children to make families feel at home.

The menu has lots of salads and soups - including a wild mushroom flavoured one served in a small loaf - fried stuffed dumplings and lots of grilled meats and fish.

A spokesman said: “Berneliu Uzeiga is very popular in Lithuania and we have operated a restaurant under the brand in London successfully for four years. We looked at Peterborough because we wanted somewhere with a large Lithuanian community but we hope the restaurant will appeal to anyone who likes this type of food.”

It is Peterborough’s second Lithuanian restaurant after Kaimas on Lincoln Road, Millfield, opened in 2011.
