Reaction to last week’s column on PCC’s decision to withdraw weekend groundsman support at football venues...
I would like to see PCC doing more to support sport in the city, but it is a bit much complaining about a fee of less than £3 per player as most other sports get no support at all and have to pay their own way.
In most other sports they do have to clear the dog poo themselves, clean the changing rooms, cut the grass with no help from council whilst paying their own way. And most people do this happily as it is what being part of a team is about. What makes footballers so special and different?
Well said Swanny. There will be a few that manage to find the volunteers to do what is needed, but I can see all sorts of problems arising.
If the Saturday boys don’t clean the changing rooms, then the Sunday boys are not going to bother.
To not even reduce the cost of the pitch so at least clubs could try and pay someone to do it would have at least been an acknowledgement.
How much will it save as well? Not much I imagine in the scheme of things.
Yet no doubt we are still paying the loan on the purchase of London Road! Perhaps Posh would like to pay for the groundsmen and give something back to the city and local football?
I am not aware of any other sport where you hire a pitch when you have to clean the changing room yourself.
Is that happening for hockey? aerobics? badminton etc etc?
And if you think running a football club only costs £3 a player a week then you have never run one!
