Stamford comedy club is no joke as it wins top prize

Voodoo Stands Up secured the Best Comedy Club prize at this year’s Midlands Comedy Awards. The monthly comedy club, which operates at Mama Liz’s in North Street, came top in a public vote that garnered more than 1100 responses.

Peterborough-based comedian Jay Islaam, who founded the awards in 2014, said: “The Midlands Comedy Awards were established to recognise the huge number of hard working and talented people in our regional comedy community. These are the individuals who bring laughter to thousands across the Midlands and beyond every year, and this Awards Gala is our big annual celebration for the regional scene.

“The inaugural awards last year were very well supported by the industry and the public, with more than 1000 votes cast, which was amazing. However, this year has far exceeded all of our expectations. In total we received more than 4000 votes, which is truly astonishing, and it’s wonderful that so many people have taken part.

“Voodoo Stands Up winning the top prize was certainly a surprise, given the tough competition they faced. However, they punch well above their weight in the comedy world, and work very hard to ensure their customers, and the comedians performing at the club, enjoy the experience, and this is what helped them overcome their bigger regional rivals to be declared Best Midlands Comedy Club.”
