Special commendation awarded to RAF Wittering's heritage centre committee

RAF Wittering’s rich history is preserved at the heritage centre which covers the station’s story from its First World War beginnings in 1916, through to the Harrier years up to the present day. It is cared for on a voluntary basis by service personnel, civil servants and retirees.

The special commendation was presented to the Heritage Centre Committee by Air Vice-Marshal Susan Gray, who was on her first official visit to the Cambridgeshire Station as the newly appointed Air Officer Commanding 38 
Group.

RAF Wittering’s recent centennial meant a huge increase in visitors for the heritage centre as senior RAF figures, dignitaries, veterans and former station personnel soaked up the station’s history, including the newly installed Roll of Remembrance.

Sqn Ldr Mark Hassall is chairman of the Heritage Centre Committee. He said: “An unbelievable amount of work has gone into the heritage centre this year; all of it given from volunteers’ free time. I’m so glad for the team that they’ve received this commendation, they’ve really earned it.”

The heritage centre is open to recognised local interest groups on the last Friday of each month during the summer.

In addition to the world famous Harriers, through the fascinating exhibits visitors will get a sense of everything the station has achieved during its 100 years.
