SPALDING MURDER: Teenagers charged with murder of Spalding mum and daughter due to appear in court this morning

The teenagers, both aged 14 and believed to be a boy and a girl, have been charged after the discovery of the bodies of the woman and girl at a property in Dawson Avenue on Friday afternoon.

They have both been remanded to appear before Lincoln Magistrates’ Court.

Police say they are not in a position to be able to formally identify the deceased but they are believed to be 49-year-old St Paul’s School dinner lady Elizabeth Edwards and her 13-year-old daughter Katie, who attended the Sir John Gleed School in Spalding.

DCI Martin Holvey, of EMSOU Major Crime and who is leading the enquiry, said: “Post mortem examinations will be carried out in due course but again I still need to speak to anyone with any information that might be relevant from Dawson Avenue from around noon on Wednesday (April 13) to noon on Friday (April 15).

“If you saw or heard anything that you thought was suspicious or unusual I’d encourage you to get in touch as soon as possible. Please call the non-emergency number 101 quoting incident 163 of 15/04/2016 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

“Our officers will continue to carry out enquiries in the locality and local uniformed officers will also be in the area. If you have any concerns please don’t hesitate to talk to them.”

Friends and family have spoken of their shock on Facebook. Liz’s partner Graham Green, who is believed to be staying with friends in Derby, said this morning: “I’ve been a wake ages wondering what sort of day will happen today. Still lots of things are going through my mind. The lady meant the world to me – she was my rock and I was her grumpy Graham. And Katie, so young – lots of good times in front of us been taken away.”

Helena Coalho, a friend of Katie’s, wrote in reply: “I wish they just came back. I miss them so much. Katie was like a sister to me and her mum was like a second mother to me.”

Relative Mary Cottingham also posted a picture tribute to Liz and Katie on her Facebook page.

It is believed that Liz, originally from Edinburgh, was a dinner-lady at nearby St Paul’s Primary School, less than half a mile from her home.

UPDATE 6.45PM: A mum and her 13-year-old daughter have been named locally as the victims of a double murder investigation in Spalding.

Police are yet to confirm that the bodies found at the semi-detached house in Dawson Avenue on Friday lunchtime were Liz Edwards and her daughter Katie.

However, friends and family have spoken of their shock on Facebook. Liz’s partner Graham Green said: “My babe has gone but you will always in my heart forever and ever and ever r.i.p”

Helena Coalho, a friend of Katie’s, wrote in reply: “I wish they just came back i miss them so much katie was like a sister to my and her mum was like a second mother to me.”

Police are continuing their investigations and are still trying to trace relatives.

Two people have been arrested in connection with the enquiry. They continue to be interviewed this morning.

Superintendent Paul Timmins said: “The events that unfolded in Spalding yesterday have understandably generated a great deal of local concern and upset.

“I would like to make clear that this type of crime is extremely rare and not something we often see. Indeed, we believe this is a completely isolated incident. There is still a lot of police activity in the area and extra officers in the neighbourhood and I would encourage anyone who has any concerns to please talk to our officers.

“This is very much an active investigation that is in its early stages and police would like people not to speculate as to the circumstances surrounding it. We are looking at a number of lines of enquiry and doing our utmost to get to the bottom of what has happened.”

UPDATE 10.45AM SATURDAY: Police have confirmed they are treating the suspicious deaths of two people in Spalding as murder.

Bodies were discovered at a house in Dawson Avenue just after 12.15pm yesterday.

Today forensic investigations are continuing at the scene, but police say they are not yet in a position to be able to name the deceased as family members are still being made aware.

Two people have been arrested in connection with the enquiry. They continue to be interviewed this morning.

UPDATE 5.20PM FRIDAY: This is the house in Spalding where two bodies were found earlier today.The deaths are being treated as suspicious and two people have been arrested.

Police are still on the scene at 5 Dawson Avenue, off Royce Road, and a broken window stands at the front of the property.

A further police update on the suspicious deaths is expected from the police later today (Friday) or tomorrow (Saturday).

FRIDAY, 3.53PM: An investigation is under way after the bodies of two people were discovered at a property in Dawson Avenue, off Royce Road, Spalding, early this afternoon.

Their deaths are being treated as suspicious and police are currently contacting next of kin.

Two people have been arrested in connection with the investigation and are currently helping police with their enquiries.

At this stage police are not able to release further details but hope to update either later today or tomorrow.
