Sculpture set for new home at Peterborough's Key Theatre

Plans have been submitted to Peterborough City Council from culture trust Vivacity to install Sir Anthony Caro’s ‘Lagoon’ and relocate the theatre’s bike rack.

The celebrated sculptor’s work was conceived in 1976 and bought by the Peterborough Development Corporation in 1984, which put it on display outside Stuart House in St John’s Street.

It was later placed in the Thorpe Meadows ‘Sculpture Trail’ where it received negative feedback before being put up for auction in 2011 by the Peterborough Sculpture Trust. However, no bidders met a £100,000 to £150,000 reserve price and the sculpture was due to be put into storage.

Vivacity’s planning application said the mild steel sculpture is “currently being restored and we hope it can be brought back to as near its original surface as is possible.”

Vice-chairman Toby Wood said the Peterborough Civic Society “supports anything that enhances the cityscape.” He added: “The city centre in particular needs good quality sculpture and artworks.”
