He visited the Conservative Club in Broadway, Peterborough, to congratulate members.

Last week he visited the city to speak to members of Perkins staff about the upcoming EU referendum.

Mr Cameron told supporters: “The ‘super Thursday’ elections show that Labour has completely lost touch with the people it is supposed to represent.”

Addressing supporters in Peterborough, the Prime Minister said it was “remarkable” that, after six years in government, the Conservatives had more councillors than any other party.

“Local election day for sitting Prime Ministers is supposed to be a day of dread,” he said.

“It’s meant to be a day when you are sitting there waiting for someone to knock on the door like the condemned man waiting for the hangman. That wasn’t what it was like last night.”

Mr Cameron said the Conservatives had held councils right across the country, won seats in England, and taken control of the city council in Peterborough for the first time.

“The Labour Party have lost touch with the hard-working people they are supposed to represent,” he said.

“They are so obsessed with their left-wing causes and unworkable economic policies, they’ve forgotten that people want jobs, people want livelihoods, people want lower taxes, people want homes they live in and can afford to own - the things that we are now delivering.

“What these elections show is where we are a united, mainstream, One Nation, compassionate Conservative Party we can win, we can serve our country and communities and we can deliver the things that we believe in.”

He also told the councillors, MPs and other supporters that ‘the hard work starts on Monday.’

He said: “The people in Peterborough who worked so hard who have done so well representing the people of this great city, who are seeing jobs created, seeing businesses come to Peterborough, seeing great regeneration in Peterborough, seeing homes being built in Peterboorough, you won because you worked hard and you deserved to win.

“So have a celebration today, have a celebration over the weekend, and the work starts on Monday. I’ve got a small majority, John’s got a small majority, but I’m sure with the commitment and determination you’ve all shown you are going to do great things for this great city.”
