Undecided? MEPs have final say on the big vote

From 7am this morning to 10pm, if you are a British, Irish or Commonwealth citizen on the electoral register you can have your say on an historic referendum.

Because today, voters will give their verdict on whether they want Britain to remain in the European Union, or leave.

This is the first chance since 1975 for the British people to have their say on membership of the body, although 41 years ago we were voting on whether to stay in the European Economic Community.

It may be a cliché, but every vote could count in this referendum, with the polls suggesting a tight race. The result of the Peterborough count is expected to be announced on Friday at around 2am.

The votes will then be sent to one of 12 regional centres across the country which are collating the results.

The final totals are not expected to be announced until after 7am, but it should be clear before then which way the votes are going.

According to a poll in February by the website YouGov, Peterborough is the second most eurosceptic place in the country.

That poll has drawn the attention of the national and international media, with journalists from Switzerland, the Netherlands and the US visiting the city in the run-up to the referendum.
