A letting agent previously fined thousands of pounds for operating without a licence and allowing families to live in appalling and dangerous conditions is standing for the Conservatives in East Ward in May’s Peterborough City Council elections.

Shah Lal, husband of West Ward councillor Yasmeen Maqbool, who is not standing for re-election, was ordered to pay £14,120 after council officers uncovered a host of life-threatening and dirty conditions at a former guest house in Limetree Avenue, Millfield,

Councillor Wayne Fitzgerald, a fellow Conservative, said: “Mr Lal like everyone else will be subject to public scrutiny, and the public will decide if they elect him or not.”
