The news comes a few months after vocal arguments between the different political groups over the issue with the ruling Conservatives saying they wanted to find out more information from the government before entering into an arrangement.

Now, council leader Cllr John Holdich has written to the government informing it that the council is willing to provide emergency assistance.

Speaking at the Full Council meeting last week, following a question on the matter by Cllr Nick Sandford, Cllr Holdich said: I’ve considered the government’s request and I would like to confirm we are willing to assist if we are able to do so.

“But I would need further information from the government before agreeing.”

Peterborough is already providing support to refugees as it is a regional refugee centre .
