Peterborough City Council will ask Prime Minister David Cameron to recognise a Palestinian state after a motion was passed at full council.
The motion from Labour Councillor Nabil Shabbir was quickly agreed without need for debate.
Cllr Shabbir said: “We are further away from peace than ever before in Palestine. We have seen a significant expansion of illegal Israeli settlements and a humanitarian crisis of catastrophic proportions.
“Israel has been occupying Palestinian land for 50 years.
“The Israelis are seeking to strangle East Jerusalem. The Israeli government pay no price for their actions.
“These injustices affect the whole population of Palestine regardless of faith.
“Failure to resolve this conflict will have far-reaching safety implications both in the Middle East but further afield, potentially even closer to home.”
The motion follows a decision by MPs in Parliament to recognise the state of Palestine, although this does not impact on Britain’s policy.
