Work at Junction 20 roundabout of the Paston Parkway will help to increase capacity at the junction, improve traffic flow and reduce congestion, according to Peterborough City Council.

The number of lanes approaching and on the roundabout have been increased and full traffic light signalisation put in place.

The works, which began last July, also included carriageway resurfacing with a reduced noise surface material and the installation of LED street lighting.

It is expected to result in improved journey times for road users, particularly as the junction provides interchange links to the A1, A47, A15 and A16.

The works will also help alleviate future traffic congestion from planned further housing at the nearby Norwood and Paston Reserve development sites.

The scheme was fully funded by the Greater Cambridge Greater Peterborough Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP).

Councillor Peter Hiller, council cabinet member for growth, planning, housing and economic development, said: “This was an important and necessary improvement programme for a busy junction completed ahead of schedule and on budget.

“Road users will see the benefit to their journey now and, with future housing development to the surrounding area on the horizon, in the future.

“This work was only possible due to funding from the Greater Cambridge Greater Peterborough Local Enterprise Partnership so we would like to thank them for their support of the city.

“We would also like to thank motorists and residents for their patience and understanding while these works have been carried out.”

Neil Darwin, chief executive of the Greater Cambridge Greater Peterborough LEP, said: “Supporting infrastructure improvements to enable the continued growth of Peterborough is an important part of the work we do here at the LEP.

“We are pleased to have provided funding towards the upgrading of Junction 20 of the A47 – a key route into the city for commuters and visitors alike.”
