Mr Jackson - who has not always seen eye-to-eye with the Conservative Party Leader - said Mr Cameron could be proud of some of the things he achieved while he has been Prime Minister.

He said: “I am not surprised he has made the announcement.

“He has served as party leader and Prime Minister for 11 years and six years respectively, and he can be proud of some of he achievements he has made.

“I do think that in view of the EU referendum result he has made the correct decision.

“He is doing the correct thing by agreeing a caretaker role. He will need to put together a negotiation team to negotiate the exit from the EU.”

Mr Jackson said he was reserving judgement about who he was backing to replace Mr Cameron as Prime Minister. He said: “Lets see who puts their name forward first.”

Mr Jackson also said he was ‘unimpressed’ by the tone of the campaigning in the lead up to the count.

He said: “As I alluded to before, I was unimpressed and sad at the tone of the campaign.

People who wanted us to remain in the Eu missed an opportunity to put a positive picture for remaining in the EU.

“If people tell others who oppose their views that they are racist and backwards thinking, they will push against you.

“Reflecting in my role - I resigned my government position in 2011 to campaign for a referendum. If I achieve nothing else I helped bring about a referendum goiving people the chance to make their own destiny. I feel incredibly elated and proud.”
