Money to crack down on rogue landlords given to Peterborough City Council

Money to crack down on rogue landlords who force tenants to live in squalid conditions and 'beds in sheds' has been awarded to Peterborough City Council.

Peterborough is one of 48 councils housing minister Brandon Lewis said have successfully applied for the extra funding which will help them to carry out raids, inspect properties, survey more streets and demolish sheds and prohibited buildings.

The 48 councils are receiving a share of £5 million.

Protections against “revenge evictions” - when tenants have a legitimate complaint against their landlord - were recently introduced.

Mr Lewis said: “Many private rental tenants are happy with their home and the service they receive, but there are still rogue landlords that exploit vulnerable people and force their tenants to live in overcrowded and squalid accommodation.”
