The MEP, whose office is in Peterborough, said he is still hoping that Suzanne Evans will put her name forward.

And he also said he was a “big admirer” of Lisa Duffy, who represents Ramsey ward on Huntingdonshire District Council, and is seriously considering standing as UKIP leader.

Mr O’Flynn said: “She would offer something fresh and energetic - a roll your sleeves up leader for the party wanting to get something done.”

The mum of six has also received strong support from Jay Beecher, deputy chairman of UKIP Peterborough, who said she is “passionate, organised, and appeals to a wider audience.”

He added: “I’m certain that she will be the next leader of UKIP and that she’ll be able to move the party forward.”

Cllr Duffy, who can now be backed at 16/1 with the bookies, is a former party director for UKIP and is currently Mr O’Flynn’s chief of staff.
