Nene Parkway improvements vital for Peterborough’s growth

Plans for improvements to Peterborough’s Nene Parkway will be a major boost to the city’s economy according to Combined Authority Mayor James Palmer.

The Economic Case for the A1260 improvements scheme in Peterborough demonstrates that the project achieves a Benefit Cost Ratio of 3.3 meaning it offers high value for money.
That was the message from the members of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority (CPCA) Transport and Infrastructure Committee, as they approved almost £1m for project planning at their meeting last week.

The detailed imagery clearly shows how the improvements will not only widen the junctions of the A1260 with the A47 and the A1139, but extend the slip-roads and the flare of the interchange with the route to create longer lane approaches.

Metro Mayor, James Palmer, said: “It’s very important that we all learn from Peterborough because it’s a superb example of what can be achieved if you put advanced infrastructure ahead of housing delivery, everything thereafter happens much more smoothly because of that.

“I’m not saying necessarily that we should look to the car as the provider for our infrastructure incentive, as those who looked to develop new-towns like Peterborough did in the 1960s and 1970s, but we can do the same using forward thinking.”

Two Full Business Cases will be funded with the money: The diagrams first where the A1260 meets the A1139 at Junction 3 is a large, grade-separated junction between two of Peterborough’s busiest strategic roads and a crucial cornerstone of the Parkway Network, connecting the A1139 Fletton Parkway and A1260 Nene Parkway, thus providing the majority of access to south-west Peterborough heavily used by trips in the southwest of Peterborough, as it accommodates eastbound, westbound, and northbound trips.

The junction gives access to a large number of facilities, businesses, and residences and experiences significant peak hour congestion. £500,000 will be spent on plans for its’ improvements.

Where the A1260 meets the A47 at Junction 15 on the western edge of Peterborough’s urban area, access to the A1260 Nene Parkway, Bretton Way, Thorpe Wood and the A47 Soke Parkway and is heavily used by trips between the west of Peterborough and the City Centre, and a significant proportion of north – south trips as it provides access to one of only three river crossings within Peterborough. £470,000 will be spent on the plans for its’ improvements. .

The key milestones to come are: July/August 2020 – January 2021 Detailed Design undertaken and Full Business Case; February 2021 – March 2021 Full Business Case to be reviewed by CPCA, funding sought for scheme construction; and April 2021 – December 2021 Mobilisation, construction and demobilisation.
