Gillian Beasley told a meeting of the county council’s general purposes committee on Thursday: “The care homes now are able to source their PPE (personal protective equipment) through what is called the PPE hub, which is in Alconbury.

“There are supplies there, and there was another delivery of supplies this week, and so they are able to source PPE for their purposes, so just to reassure you there is sufficient PPE for them.”

A number of volunteer organisations have sprung up across the county and nationwide amid reports of a PPE shortage in the health service.

NHS trusts have issued public calls for more PPE during the outbreak, including the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust which put out an appeal to community groups making scrubs on April 9.
