In the last four weeks, officers have slapped around 150 fixed penalty notices on vehicles in the town centre alone – many of which were making it difficult for emergency services to be able to get through.

Fire and ambulance services have raised the issue with police, along with members of the public and local business owners who are fed-up with the inconsiderate parking.

As a result, police have joined forces with fire crews to highlight issues surrounding parking in the town centre and the problems emergency services can face when trying to negotiate their way through inconsiderate and illegally parked vehicles.

Police are now reminding motorists to park properly – or face a fine.

Wisbech PCSO Lisa Mann said: “ This is an ongoing issue which has been highlighted to us by the public, business owners and the emergency services. We hope to educate the public where they can legally park and, in turn, make Wisbech a safer town centre for all.” She urged all motorists to ensure they adhere to the town centre’s Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) which came into force in February 2015 and operates seven days a week.

The order permits access to the town centre via Hill Street and Church Terrace with parking in designated bays only.

There is a one-way system from Hill Street onto Union Street and High Street and from Church Terrace onto the Market Place and High Street, with the option of turning left onto Market Street from the Market Place.

Free designated parking bays are available along Hill Street, Union Street, Market Place, Market Street and High Street for disabled blue badge holders and loading only.

Blue badge holders have a maximum time limit of three hours.

Loading bays are for any class of vehicle loading or unloading goods to premises only.

There are free car parks at St Peters, Somers Road, Chapel Road and the Horsefair, plus on-street parking. There are also a limited number of parking bays on the Market Place accessible from the Church Terrace entrance only.

PCSO Mann said: “Any vehicles parked not in accordance with the rules of the CPZ will be liable to a fixed penalty notice.”
