Peterborough goes the extra mile for Sport Relief

Schools and businesses across Peterborough and the surrounding areas have been doing their bit for the national charity campaign.

One of the biggest efforts came from employees at ABAX, who completed laps of the pitch at Peterborough United’s ABAX Stadium.

The laps started at 8am, and staff were taking it in turn to complete the run.

ABAX’s Marketing Assistant Lauren George said: “We plan to have at least one of the team walking or running their way around the pitch at all times.

“ABAX has recently taken on a number of new staff in Peterborough and we all thought this would be another good way of getting to know each other as well as raising money for Sport Relief.

“We have a great relationship with Peterborough United and thank them for letting us use the area for our fundraising efforts.”

Another team racking up the miles was XL Displays, based in Orton Southgate.

Staff aimed to complete 200 miles on a treadmill this week.

A spokesman said: “Each team member has to do at least one mile a day, some will do two. This is a real challenge for us as many of our team members are not runners! We will begin at 7:30am every day and we will collectively run all day until 6.30pm.

“We had set ourselves a target of raising £1500 in total but we have since exceeded our target already with plenty more donations due in from the team.”

Schools have also been doing their bit, with sponsored football games, rowing events and runs to keep pupils active. Children have also been dressing up as their sporting heroes to raise cash.

And there is still time for residents to get involved, with the Peterborough Sport Relief Mile taking place on Sunday.

The event will be held at Ferry Meadows, starting at 10.30am.
