Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice in desperate plea for protective equipment

Sue Ryder - the charity which runs Peterborough’s Thorpe Hall Hospice - has made an urgent plea for protective equipment to keep staff safe - or it might be forced to close hospices.

The charity said it would run out of the vital equipment within days.

In a bid to be able to continue caring for the dying, Sue Ryder is being forced to purchase PPE through private companies but it is poor quality and in most cases ineffective.

Without immediate changes to the PPE supply chain the charity will have to cease providing care for dying people across the country which will put significant additional strain on the NHS.

Earlier this month the charity said it was facing a funding crisis as a result of the pandemic.

Before the Coronavirus struck, statutory funding only covered approximately one third of the costs involved in running the charity’s end of life care. Sue Ryder bridged that gap with fundraising efforts and income from its 450 shops nationwide. With fundraising events now cancelled and its shops closed, the charity has a matter of months before it will have to close its hospices and hospice at home services across the country.

Sue Ryder will have a funding gap of £12 million over the next three months. Without immediate financial support, the critical end of life care that Sue Ryder provides to thousands of families each year will cease.
