Spectacular convoy to arrive at Peterborough hospital after raising thousands for the NHS

Dozens of truckers will drive through the Fens and onto Peterborough City Hospital in a spectacular convoy after raising thousands of pounds for charity.

The convoy of 67 vehicles will leave Chatteris at 6.30pm tonight, and drivers are aiming to arrive at the hospital by 8pm, in time for the weekly clap for carers.

The run has raised nearly £7,000 for the NHS, and was the brain child of Fenland lorry driver Danny Whitmore.

Danny said: “I mentioned to my Mrs that I wanted to do something, and then mentioned it to (fellow co-organiser) Nathan Cowling.

“The idea then just spread by word of mouth,

“We initially wanted to raise £1,000, and have about 20 trucks - but now there are 67 of us.

“Everyone has been so generous - but it is nothing as to what the NHS has done for us.”

The convoy will run through Chatteris, Wimblington, Benwick, Ramsey, Pondersbridge, Stanground and Hampton before arriving at the hospital at 8pm.

Danny said; “We will be understanding of the restrictions and the health and safety guidelines by staying in our vehicles and also keeping to the 2m safety distance if needed to leave the vehicles.

“We will do a drive by on the hospital grounds so not to cause any obstruction, we will keep things moving. All I would like is a good show of vehicles and to raise as much money as we can for our fellow key workers.”
