RSPCA officers worked with Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue to catch the swans which were left covered in oil in a waterway near Peakirk.

The operation saw a large number of swans caught and checked and the three that were found to be affected by the oil have been taken to a wildlife hospital for specialist cleaning.

A statement on the RSPCA Peterborough and District branch Facebook page said: “The Environment Agency are doing their bit to clear up the oil and reduce further pollution, and our officers will be keeping an eye on the waterfowl in the area over the coming days to see if any more need to be rescued and treated.

“The birds are now on their way to a wildlife hospital for a damn good shower and medical care to ensure they’ll be fit for release as soon as is appropriate.”
