Peterborough residents are lacing up their trainers this month and walking in honour of their loved ones to raise money for a local hospice.

Throughout October, people are celebrating the memory of someone special with a Walk to Remember. They are choosing their distance, their start and finish line, and a route that means something to them.

The charity walk is being organised by Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice, which provides expert palliative care for people with life-limiting conditions as well as supporting their families.

A Walk to Remember is exactly what Jo Oxenham from Peterborough is doing in tribute to her mum Carol, who was cared for at the hospice in September 2016.

Jo is planning to step out this weekend and do a special 10k walk at either Rutland Water or Ferry Meadows. So far, she has raised £200 for the Peterborough hospice.

Last year, Jo completed a similar remembrance walk around Oundle with her friend Chan, which saw them raise £340.

Jo, who works in administration for an insurance brokers, said: “I think Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice is an amazing place and holds a very special place in my heart. My mum was cared for there in the last few remaining days of her life.

“Sue Ryder provided amazing support for my mum when she needed it and gave her the chance to spend her last few days in a peaceful environment.

“I loved being able to take part in the Walk to Remember for my mum – she loved walking and being outside. It was nice to be able to take part in something that reminds me of her in a place that was special to her – she would be so proud and happy.

“I hope my donations will enable Sue Ryder to continue to provide their amazing care.”

Victoria Potter, Community Fundraiser at Sue Ryder Thorpe Hall Hospice, said: “A huge thank you to Jo and everyone who is making strides in our Walk to Remember this month.
