Peterborough pub staff pay back community by keeping streets clean

Staff at The Moorhen have been going on weekly litter picks around Hampton

The idea came from Matthew Southwell, who became the Assistant manager of the pub on West Lake Avenue, Hampton Vale, last month.  A group of six staff go out each weekend to help clear rubbish they can find in the surrounding streets and nature reserves.The staff also regularly sweep the road in front of the pub to keep the street looking clean.  Matthew has even been out picking up litter himself, along with his nieces, who are ages five and 12.

This is all part of a commitment from the pub to give back to its local community.  He said: “It’s all about giving back to the community. They are helping us by continuing to visit and we are helping them.  “The staff enjoy it and it helps to bring the community together. It’s nice to get good feedback but we’re mainly doing it to bring the community together and to show we care.” “It’s disappointing that there is so much though, we were only out for about an hour at the weekend and we managed to fill three or four bags. This included needles and other small bags that drugs have been stored in.”We all want a cleaner community and we especially recognise that Hampton does have a lot of beauty spots and we would like to keep it that way.”
