Peterborough community groups come to aid of residents

Community groups across Peterborough have been making a fantastic effort to continue to keep nearby vulnerable residents from going without food and other necessities.

Two more groups have been recently set up on Facebook; Shelfwatch Peterborough and Ramsey Area Covid-19 Support.

Shelfwatch Peterborough has been helping residents to keep an eye on where to locate much-needed items.

Noticing the need, Paul Munday set up the group as many people were unable to get items they needed such as toilet rolls or formula for baby milk. Gaining over 1000 members the group has taken off with members uploading which shops have certain items, and members have also come to one another’s aid offering their own supplies if someone cannot find something.

The group has also been working with independent suppliers, to offer discounts on items such as potatoes and to encourage members to shop local.

Dedicated to the Ramsey area, Ramsey Area Covid-19 Support has been a huge success having only been set up for a matter of days. Having so far helped 66 individuals, the group hope to grow on their 45 local volunteers.

Carol Aston, Chair of Ramsey Neighbourhoods Trust said: “This is what we already do, just scaled up massively! Ramsey Neighbourhoods Trust is here to support the needs of our community and always will be.”

Working with the mayor, the foodbank and other community groups it has meant that emergency food parcels are in place, shopping has been done for those in isolation and much more.

A special touch from the Families and Young People’s Project Manager has been Facebook live videos where members of the youth club have been able to reconnect with one another.

One resident called it a ‘lifeline’. They said: “We’ve been poorly for eight days now, we are humbled that you gave up your time to help us. A massive thank you, we would not manage without you.”
