Olympic and world champion cyclists will be racing around Peterborough’s streets for the penultimate round of a top UK event.

Spectators can join the TV crews on Tuesday, June 9, in watching some of the country’s best riders flash through the city centre in round nine of the Pearl Izumi Tour Series.

Two-time Olympic gold medallist Ed Clancy is expected to be one of the star names on show, with each of the nine teams not naming their line-ups until race day

Mr Clancy could be lining up against fellow Olympic gold medallist Steven Burkes when the men’s event begins at 7.30pm, while Peterborough Cycling Club member and Bourne resident Steve Lampier will be leading Team Raleigh GAC in the race which should last an hour and a quarter.

Madison Genesis currently lead the standings with debutants ONE Pro Cycling, the team of England cricketer Matt Prior, in second.

Cycling legend Sir Bradley Wiggins is on the rider list for Team Wiggins but is not expected to compete.

Earlier in the day, round four of the women’s event, the Matrix Fitness GP Series, will go ahead from 5.30pm until 6.15pm with former Olympic champions Dani King, Laura Trott and Joanna Rowsell all set to feature, alongside local rider Keira McVitty.

ITV4 will be filming as the riders start from Cathedral Square before speeding through Bridge Street then on to Bourges Boulevard and back around to Cowgate.

In addition, the Tour of Cambridgeshire is coming to Peterborough on Saturday and Sunday (June 6-7) with races starting and ending at the Showground.

The Time Trial is on Saturday (11am-6pm) and the 128km Gran Fondo is on Sunday. Road closures will be operating. See www.tourofcambridgeshire.com/Road_Closures.php.

Tour series road closures

To accommodate the races, the following roads will be closed to all traffic from 2pm on Tuesday, June 9, until approximately 9pm:

. Bourges Boulevard in a south easterly direction from the Crescent roundabout to the Rivergate roundabout. A diversion will be in place (the northern direction of Bourges Boulevard will be kept open)

. Upper Bridge Street

. Church Street

. Long Causeway

. Cowgate

. Wentworth Street

. Priestgate

. Trinity Street

. Exchange Street

. Queens Street

. Kings Street

. Cross Street

. St Peters Road

In addition to the road closures, all parking bays, which includes limited waiting, disabled and loading bays, will be suspended from 8am-9pm on the day.

The bays are located within Cowgate, Wentworth Street, and Priestgate.
