Friends and family of George Robinson launched #teamgeorge after the 18-year-old suffered spinal injuries in a match for Stamford School in South Africa in July.

Since then the campaign has been gathering attention both on social media and in the real world, thanks in part to the #teamgeorge T-shirts and hats. And more and more sporting stars are helping spread the word, by posing for photos and recording video messages for George.

Some of the latest to do so include Irish rugby legend Brian O’Driscoll, England World Cup winner Jonny Wilkinson and recent captain Chris Robshaw, and new England head coach Eddie Jones, who recorded a message while still in charge of Japan.

Jonny said: “I just wanted to say a massive get well soon and show my support, along with a huge amount of the rugby community’s, to help you get through this enormously challenging time.

“The way you have attacked it, the way that you will overcome this with your family as a team is hugely inspirational, and the courage that you are showing is something we can only dream of.”

And Eddie added: “I’m so sorry mate. I’m sure you are going to have a good recovery.

“Make sure you keep positive, keep believing you will recover and I’m sure you will.”

George’s father Simon said: “Sport and what it represents is a big part of George’s life and the amazing messages of support from sports people, famous and not-so-famous, is uplifting and inspiring.”

A trust has been set up to help care for George, as it is likely he will require long-term personal care and support. And plenty of people are organising fundraising events.

Among those planned in the next few weeks is a six-hour static cycle at Westside Health and Fitness in Stamford from 9.10am on January 31. Anyone is welcome to take part in exchange for a donation of £5 per hour.
