The company says it will not renew the lease on the store when it expires in the near future.

The travel firm, which acquired the outlet when it took over the former Thomas Cook stores in 2019 following the holiday giant’s collapse, says it is in talks with staff to find other work.

Hays Travel also recently closed its store on the corner of the Serpentine Green shopping centre in Hampton.

A spokeswoman for Hays Travel said: “The lease on the Peterborough Queensgate store will not be renewed following the expiry of the licence period.

“We are now discussing a number of options for alternative work for all colleagues at the shop.

“There are other Hays Travel stores nearby and all customers continue to be looked after by staff working from home via phone, zoom, FaceTime and other means during lockdown.”

The spokeswoman said the third national lockdown and travel ban meant “the company had to act”.

She said 388 staff affected by the closures would be offered “alternative work options” to minimise redundancies.
