Gary's set to run 450 miles and climb the three peaks

An adventurous father-of-two is preparing to climb the three highest peaks in England, Scotland and Wales '“ and run 450 miles between them carrying all of his own kit.

Gary Walton, 38, of Highlands Way, Stamford, has set himself the gruelling challenge to raise funds for Cancer Research UK and BBC Children In Need.

Starting on Monday in Scotland, Gary will climb 
1,346 metres to the top of Ben Nevis before returning to ground level and running along the West Highland Way towards Glasgow.

Sleeping in a tent along the route, he will then head towards Carlisle and into the Lake District via the Cumbria Way where he aims to start climbing 978 metres to the top of Scafell Pike on Thursday.

After that he will run along the route of the A6 into Wales where he will climb 1,085 metres to the top of Mount Snowdon.

Gary, who is the manager of the Cotswold Outdoor store in Peterborough, said it is believed only one other person has previously attempted the Three Peaks Challenge while running between each location.

He said: “At the start of the challenge I’ll be carrying kit weighing around 13.5kg although thankfully it will gradually reduce as I eat my supplies.

“From start to finish I expect the challenge to take between seven and 10 days. I have done ultra-running races before and self-supported events so it’s not totally new to me but I will be alone next week with no support crew.

“I will have a GPS tracker however, so people can see how I’m getting on.”

Gary’s partner Chrissy Tresidder and children Eloise, 6, and Seren, 3, will be cheering him on from home.

Gary has currently raised £880 for charity and is hoping to added to the total as his challenge progresses.
