Funding for new Peterborough project will help youngsters learn new skills

Known as NexGen, a new project initiated by Peterborough charity, Community First (Peterborough) will build relationships with young people within the heart of Peterborough to inspire them to become active members of their own community.

The Peterborough-based charity which helps residents within the Gladstone, Millfield and Lincoln Road area of Peterborough to lead happier, healthier and safer lives will receive £3,000 from the Commissioner’s Youth and Community Fund to kickstart the project.

NexGen will help approximately 20 young people to participate in arts and wellness projects which bring them closer to the place they live in.

Acting commissioner, Ray Bisby said: “Community First (Peterborough) is an excellent example of how effective community driven solutions can be.

“Project NexGen will provide young people living in the centre of Peterborough with a host of exciting opportunities to get involved with projects which will equip them with lifelong skills. It will also show them how their actions can shape the place they live and inspire them to become proactive community members.”

Young people will be able to work with local arts group Diaspora Arts and Education to create their own piece of public art and upcycle unused bath tubs and mattresses into garden planters with Up the Garden Bath.

Mindfulness and meditation sessions will also be offered as well as opportunities to work with local performers.

The Commissioner’s Youth and Community Fund, now in its 5th year, supports young people to actively participate and contribute where they live, helping them to become active members of their community and lead more fulfilling lives.

The Fund is open to voluntary and community organisations who can apply for grants of up to £3,000 towards their project. More information about the terms and conditions of the funding can be found at https://www.cambridgeshire-pcc.gov.uk/
