Daily parking charges at Ferry Meadows are being introduced from March.

Charges beginning from £1.50 for up to an hour’s parking will come into force and will include cars as well as coaches, minibuses, taxis and motorbikes.

Blue badge holders will also have to pay for parking.

The daily charges will replace the current arrangement which sees a car parking charge of £4 apply at weekends and bank holidays from March until the end of October, between the hours of 10am and 4pm.

To park for over four hours at the 500-acre country park will soon cost £5, while an annual parking membership of £60 is also being offered.

Charges at Orton Meadows will also mean residents paying £5 to park there for over two hours, with the cheapest cost being £1.50 for a stay of up to an hour.

Free parking will be available for customers of Orton Meadows golf course and pitch and putt, Rutland Cycling and the Granary.

Nene Park Trust, which manages both sites, said it is looking to raise more money to improve the experience for visitors.

Teresa Wood, head of visitors services, said: “Last year, Nene Park recorded its highest visitor numbers, with over 1.6m people visiting us – a large increase on the year before.

“In order to continue to develop the Park and provide for all of our visitors, we need to increase our income.

“We have liaised extensively with our key stakeholders over the last few months and have solutions in place for groups that regularly use the Park throughout the week, as well as those who are involved in our educational programme.

“We believe that the new tiered charging system is fairer for our visitors than the previous fixed charge, and will allow for much more flexibility moving forward.”

Nene Park had announced earlier this year that daily parking charges would begin in 2016.

It said its decision on how much to charge for parking was made after discussions with councillors, tenants, residents and local groups who might be affected.

The new tiered hourly charges at Ferry Meadows will operate during opening hours, with a flat 50p hourly rate in force the rest of the time.

Ferry Meadows and Orton Meadows are situated in Ham Lane, off Oundle Road.

Further details on the parking charges are being published today (Friday, December 4) at http://www.neneparktrust.org.uk/.
