Coronavirus: 300 more care beds in Cambridgeshire to relieve pressure on hospitals

Up to 300 additional care beds have been made available outside of hospitals in Cambridgeshire to relieve pressure on the NHS during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The beds will allow for people to be discharged from hospitals more quickly.

Cambridgeshire County Council said it had received an “extraordinary” community response as it seeks to increase its capacity.

A council spokesperson said: “We are continuing to work with our NHS and care home partners and have secured up to 300 additional beds in existing residential and nursing home provisions.

“They are available to use as and when needed to discharge people quickly and safely from hospital. We haven’t reached capacity and received additional government funding via the Clinical Commissioning Group to pay for this additional resource.

“We’d like to thank our dedicated social workers, care teams and the volunteers who are all working together to ensure the wellbeing of the people in our care remains our top priority and we help them return home, where possible, in these challenging times.”
