Church lit up blue as Peterborough celebrates key workers

A Peterborough church lit up the night sky as thousands of residents paid tribute to key workers helping the country stay running.

At 8pm residents across Peterborough joined those across the country with a minute’s applause during the weekly clap for carers.

In Castor, it was a special week, as the Church of St Kyneburgha was lit up blue.

Jo Morris, Benefice Administrator at the church, said the event had been organised to keep the community spirit in the village.

She said: “We are a close knit community here, and we have been trying to come up with things to keep people close, while staying at a distance. We have done virtual quizzes and competitions, the church did lots of things at Easter, and delivered flowers on Mothering Sunday. Our rector puts out church messages every week.

“The clap for cares has become an important day for people, where they can see their neighbour and make some noise.

“There is a lot of doctors and nurses who live in Castor, and they all say they love what people are doing on Thursday nights.

“Last week we decided to do something special, and light the church up blue. We are lucky we have people in the village who have skills and equipment to do it.

“We let people know, so they could have a socially distant stroll around. It looked spectacular, and so many people have been saying nice things.”

While the church will not be doing something every week, plans are being put together for another special event in the future.”
