It is hoped that construction work will start next month with the additional premises and services opening in March.

The first site, a former engineering works, is situated next door to the SW Car Supermarket showroom and will be used to provide extra car handover and workshop space.

And the second site, which is six acres of open land about 0.8 miles away from its current premises, is being cleared for development with construction work soon to start.

John Marshall, Director of Operations at SW Car Supermarket Group, said: “What was a large engineering company is set to become our brand new handover and workshop site, which will take us up to 25 service ramps.

“The much-needed additional workshop space will mean that we can effectively handle up to 40 or 50 cars a day - which will be a fantastic increase for us.”

Anton Khan, Chief Executive Officer of the SW Car Supermarket Group, said: “Acquiring this land has been really exciting for us as it is no distance at all from our SW Car Supermarket premises. At just under six acres in size, the site is huge and to think until very recently it was just scrubland.

“As for our plans, customers will be pleased to hear that the new SW site will be able to hold an additional 700 to 800 used cars, and - a first for us here at SW - around 300 used vans too.

“We’re very excited at the prospect of offering commercial vehicles and expanding our choice to customers.”

The acquisition of both sites will enable the SW Group to grow its used car offering to customers in 2021.

Currently, its two branches - SW Car Supermarket and SW Car Superstore - hold up to 2,000 used cars in group stock.

Mr Khan said: ““Given the current circumstances, it’s an exciting start to the year for us which is set to completely change the dynamic of our business.

“In order to expand and continue to give customers plenty of choice, we need to have a wholesale approach to what we do.”

The opening of both new premises will enable the SW Group to employ up to 50 new members of staff.

Mr Marshall said: “In order to open and operate our two new sites, we’ll be recruiting an additional 40-50 team members, which given the current circumstances in our country, we are very pleased to be able to do so.

“Our policy is to recruit locally, so we hope to be able to begin this process very soon.”

Although car showrooms have been forced to close during the pandemic, the SW Group has remained open for business via its click and collect, and home delivery services.

The car supermarket has dedicated its efforts to provide a COVID-safe service and handover, and has recently teamed up with AnyVan to offer reliable and secure delivery to its customers in Peterborough, across East Anglia, and beyond.
