Youngsters at Peterborough Northern Star Girls football club are celebrating after winning £1,000 in the Mick George Skip of Gold competition run in the PT.
For the past two months, Mick George Ltd has been running its ‘Skip of Gold’ competition in Peterborough and surrounding areas, providing local sports clubs and community groups with the chance to win £1,000.
Over 100 applications were submitted before a shortlist of the 39 most deserving cases were put forward to the voting stage, with more than 1,500 votes submitted.
In what is usually a closely contested battle, there was a convincing winner, with more than eight per cent separating the top three positions. Congratulations to Peterborough Northern Star Girls for scooping the fourth Peterborough ‘Skip of Gold’ accolade. The group managed to edge out 2nd Nene Scouts who were worthy runners-up, while third position was secured by Club 73 Choir.
Peterborough Northern Star (PNS) Girls currently operate teams at the U13s, U14s and U15s age groupd.
The club delivers extended training sessions aimed at building more strength, stamina and dietary regimes - all of which are achieved through boot camps, gym and boxing classes, over and above the standard football training.
PNS Girls will use the funds to buy new kits both for match day and training, making all participants feel like they ‘belong’ to a team. In addition, the money will be spent on other apparatus, such as balls, cones, parachutes, water bottles, and bags; designed to offer further development in a fun environment.
Vince Smith, Manager of Peterborough Northern Star Girls U15s said: “This award will help us to further establish ourselves, encouraging teenage girls from all backgrounds, whether they are experienced players or looking to take up football for the first time, to join the Peterborough Northern Star Ladies FC.’’
He added: “On behalf of all the girls, I would like to say a huge thank you to everybody who voted for us, and to Mick George Ltd for giving local groups this wonderful opportunity.”
Jon Stump, Finance Director at Mick George Ltd said: “It was fantastic to see the community embrace the Skip of Gold competition, the support that the various groups received was overwhelming. This is the fourth time that we have run the competition in Peterborough and it’s clear to see by the vast number of entries just how important this support can be for the development of each nomination.’’
He added: “We are established within the Peterborough area supporting activities, individuals, clubs and charities at all levels. The Mick George Skip of Gold competition provides a little more insight to what the community really care about, and are involved in, within their daily lives. The £1,000 prize fund will undoubtedly make a real difference and should help build to a brighter future. We are proud of our community initiatives and look forward to any forthcoming engagement.’’
