The Nene Park Trust, which adopted daily charges at the site in March, said race participants received a special flat rate of £2.

Currently, parking at the site until 8pm in the summer costs £2 for stays of one hour to an hour-and-a-half. The price then increases by 50p for every additional 30 minutes of parking, with a cap of £5.

Teresa Wood, head of visitor services at the trust, said: “There are a number of charities that utilise the park for their fundraising events and we have a criteria in place whereby many of these receive either free or reduced parking.

“As a charity ourselves parking income is very important to us and all income is invested back into keeping the park well maintained, clean, tidy and safe.”

Asked if the charge will be reconsidered next year, she said the trust is continually monitoring the new parking system.

Leander Platten, event manager for Cancer Research UK, said: “It is unfortunate car parking charges were in place. We tried to inform participants about the charges ahead of the event.”RELATED
