Chelsea fans were quick to jump on social media to condemn Steven Gerrard for his stamp last weekend.
Would television programmes show replays non-stop for 48 hours? And would newspapers bang on about the offence for the same length of time?
These questions were asked because that’s what happened when Diego Costa was caught stamping recently.
And they would be fair questions, but for one important fact.
Gerrard didn’t try and excuse himself afterwards.
He came straight out after the game, faced the cameras, apologised and admitted his guilt. There was no talk of a refereeing conspiracy and no attempt to deny the obvious.
That’s why Gerrard has more class than the whole of Chelsea.
