The BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year competition proved that public votes can lead to dodgy results, and not just in Labour leadership elections.
I have no problems with Andy Murray winning as he won a global competition on his own. Those who say he lacks ‘personality’ can’t have seen his matches.
But rugby league player Kevin Sinfield finishing second with 200,000 more votes than superstar athlete Jessica Ennis-Hill was laughable. Sinfield has been a good player in a good side for a long time, but he’s not even the best rugby league player in his club team.
The SPOTY show is a sad old show these days. Dull interviews don’t make up for the absence of relevant footage. Sky and BT should take it over in 2016.
