Morecambe and Wise were arguably Britain’s greatest ever comedy act.
Ernie Wise – the one with the “short fat hairy legs’’ –lived for many years in Thorpe Avenue, off Thorpe Road in Peterborough.
He and his big pal and partner in laughs Eric Morecambe appeared at many events in the city.
This week’s pictures were prompted by a letter from reader Alan Green which was accompanied by the photograph of Ernie presumably taken at a charity cricket match. Mr Green writes: ‘‘Could readers tell me anything about this picture?
“I believe it was taken at the old Brotherhoods sporting ground by an ET photographer in the 70s. The gentlemen in the centre is Tommy Harbour. Does anyone know who the other three people were?’’
I’ve found some other pictures of the comedy legends but the details are very scant and I’m not even sure they were all taken in Peterborough.
Perhaps the one (below left) of Eric was taken at the same event as Mr Green’s picture. The caption on the back only says: “Thomas Cook Sports, Peterborough.’’
The two pictures of the pair together hamming it up for the photographer have no information with them. Do you know anything about the pictures? The bottom picture was definitely taken in the city, somewhere in the Ortons. I’m told by a colleague that the man with the chain was the mayor Ben Franklin who later became the leader of the city council. That would date the picture 1979/1980.
The name badge of the man on the right is a big clue. It identifies him as J Donaldson the MD of RSMcColl.
If you have any information about any of the pictures please get in touch.
