LETTER: Praise for Peterborough City Hospital staff who cared for me

Every so often we read in the press about how bad and badly organised our National Health Service and hospitals are.
NHS England news.NHS England news.
NHS England news.

The headlines such as “Patients left in corridors” or “Not given any water” etc.

I am sure that some of this must be true and it does make good headlines.

With this in mind I did wonder how I would cope when I was admitted to Peterborough hospital recently.

I am 84-years-old and have never spent a night in hospital before. I have a communication problem with my deafness and suffer with Parkinson’s.

With all these headlines in the back of my mind, I was a very worried old man when they wheeled me away to my room. I was filled with fear and trepidation of what was about to follow.

However, once the wonderful staff had me in their charge nothing but nothing was too much trouble for them for the next eight days.

During this time this dedicated team dealt with all my needs.

I know this is their job but they did it with so much compassion and care along with their professional skills.

The whole team from the specialists, consultants, doctors and the male and female nurses were brilliant and to say thanks to them hardly seems enough but I am proud and privileged to have met you all.

So when we hear or read the headlines about the failings of the NH, let us spare a thought for those people who work there and for the amazing job that they do on the hundreds of other cases that don’t make the headlines.

I think that we are very lucky to have easy access to this fine hospital on our doorstep.

I thank all the staff for looking after me and I will be in your debt forever. You were brilliant!
