Online entry Great Eastern Run in Peterborough now open

Last year’s event was the city’s most successful half marathon since the race made its return to Peterborough’s streets 10 years ago.

That success has led thousands to pre-register for the event, which falls on Sunday, October 9. At this stage last year, just 250 had registered.

The closing date is October 7, or when the race limits are reached, whichever comes first.

In 2015 almost 7,000 runners participated across the half marathon, Anna’s Hope 5K Fun Run and wheelchair race.

The half marathon winner, Kenyan Philip Koech, ran the event’s fastest-ever time of 61 minutes and 40 seconds. This was also the second fastest time clocked in the UK during 2015.

Annette Joyce, service director for city services and communications at Peterborough City Council, which organises the race, said: “The Perkins Great Eastern Run 2016 event looks set to be our biggest event yet.

“The race has a great reputation among half marathons in the UK, especially because its fast, flat course gives runners a really good chance of a personal best. The fact that the whole course is residential means there are spectators at every stage lending their encouragement - and that really makes a difference too.

“When you finish, not only do you get the satisfaction of completing a half marathon, you get a high quality goody bag too, which includes a technical t-shirt and other running related items.

“The funfair and stalls on the Embankment make the event a real family day out. We’re looking forward to it already!”

Race pacers will be back for the third year to help runners to achieve their best possible time on race day. Seven pacers will lead different target times, ranging from one-and-a-half-hours finish time to two hours and 45 minutes.

Free fortnightly training sessions will take place at the Peterborough Embankment Athletics Track in Bishop’s Road from July, with pacers taking part.

For those interested in the Anna’s Hope Fun Run, Junior Challenge prizes are on offer to schools and other organisations that can encourage the most entrants, and those that raise the largest amount for the charity.
