New pizza parlour in Market Deeping defies petition

Plans by Domino’s Pizza to open a takeaway at the former HSBC Bank in Market Place were backed by South Kesteven District Council at a meeting on Tuesday.

The plans proved controversial as the takeaway will be in a Grade II listed building and several district councillors on South Kesteven’s development control committee spoke against the application.

Coun Ashley Baxter of Market and West Deeping ward, who raised the petition, said: “The most shocking part of the meeting was to hear a member of the committee expressing their personal opinion that Market Deeping is a dormitory area where people are flippant about signing petitions.

“This is most insulting to the thousands of people who live and work in Market Deeping and who take great pride in their town.

“This decision will result in a triple whammy of increased traffic congestion, reduced trade for existing, locally-owned businesses and a carbuncle in the heart of our conservation area.”

A statement from Domino’s Pizza said: “This proposal will make use of a vacant listed building in Market Deeping town centre and will therefore result in a number of public benefits.

“These include the re-use of a vacant building which will significantly enhance the vitality and viability of the town centre.”
