Daniel Peart, 27, thought wife Charlotte, 28, was joking when she told him they'd won the lottery as she'd pretended a month earlier to have won £250,000.

The Whittlesey couple are now searching for a new family home after they matched five numbers on EuroMillions HotPicks in the draw on Tuesday August 28 to win £1 million.

Self-employed carpenter Daniel was on a busy building site when the call came through so wasn’t sure he’d heard his wife correctly, and given her wind-up the month before, wasn’t sure he should even believe her.

He said: “About a month ago Charlotte played a scratchcard and joked with me that she’d won £250,000 so when she first rang I thought it was another wind-up. It was only when she sent me a screenshot of the winning message that I realised it was true and from then on it’s been crazy.”

While it was Charlotte who bought their EuroMillions HotPicks Lucky Dip ticket on a whim, husband Daniel believes it’s his positivity that actually made the win happen.

Charlotte said; “Ever since he was a young lad Daniel has been convinced he will win the lottery so he’s sure he willed it to happen. I don’t mind if it was his belief or my decision to spend that spare £1.50 on EuroMillions HotPicks but whatever it is, we couldn’t be happier!”

The couple’s lucky journey started when Charlotte was buying a couple of EuroMillions tickets for the Tuesday draw on national-lottery.co.uk and seeing there was £1.50 left in their lottery account, she decided to buy a EuroMillions HotPicks line too.

She said: “I think I’ve only bought a EuroMillions HotPicks twice before so I don’t know why I decided to buy that one but I’m very glad I did. The following morning I was checking my emails in bed and saw one from The National Lottery with news about my ticket. As I was having coffee later I decided to log in, expecting to see a small amount but deep down I was daydreaming it could be a big win.”

At home with the couple’s three children Charlotte’s daydream turned to reality when she logged on and saw that message congratulating her on a £1M win. Barely able to speak, she rang her husband of five years and simply said ‘we’ve won it, we’ve won a million’.

With news of their millionaire status sinking in, Daniel headed home while Charlotte rang Camelot. When the win was confirmed she simply burst into laughter and then tears of joys, which continued until Daniel got home and the pair could cry and laugh together.

Looking ahead they are very clear about their future plans with property playing a big part. Top of the list is a new home which will replace the current three-bed they worked so hard to buy.

Charlotte said: “We made lots of sacrifices and saved so hard for the deposit for this home so I’ll always be really proud that we managed to do that but it will be so nice to have a bigger place where the children don’t need to share a bedroom. We’ve no plans to leave the area, all our friends and family are here, and we love it.

“As well as our new home, we are going looking for an investment property. Daniel has always wanted to start property developing so he’s giving up work to look for the first place. In the longer term we might even try and build our own home, but that’s some way off yet!”

While bricks and mortar is the priority, there are a few planned treats including an upgrade to Charlotte’s beloved Ford Kuga to ‘one with a DAB radio,’ new golf clubs for Daniel, hoverboards for the children – and Daniel! - and a possible Christmas trip to Lapland.
