Man jailed for beer glass attack in Spalding pub

Carl Robertson (27), of Little London, Spalding, had downed a pint and put his glass on the bar at the Hole in the Wall pub before picking it up and using it as a weapon on another man seconds later.

In a case heard at Lincoln Crown Court, Phil Howes, prosecuting, said: “The defendant picked the glass up, stepped towards the complainant and hit him twice over the forehead.

“He hit the complainant very hard and although the glass didn’t smash, the base of the glass hit the complainant, causing a two to three-centimetre laceration.”

Robertson was eventually thrown out of the pub but he left his phone behind at the scene and, as a result, police were later able to trace him.

Meanwhile, the injured man was taken to Peterborough City Hospital where he received treatment for a cut to the head.

The wound was cleaned and dressed before the victim was sent home.

Mr Howes said “The defendant was interviewed and couldn’t remember anything about this.

“It is by no means clear what the motivation was for the defendant striking him as there was no interaction between them and they didn’t know each other.”

Robertson admitted a charge of unlawful wounding due to the incident on March 19 this year.

Christopher Geeson, in mitigation, urged Judge Michael Heath to pass a suspended jail sentence, adding: “He has never been in trouble before for violence.

“He can’t say why this happened but he says he was very, very drunk and cannot remember having any interaction with the complainant at all.”

Mr Geeson also said that Robertson acted out of character and is contrite about what he did.

But Judge Heath, passing sentence, said: “If you hit somebody over the head twice in a public house then you have to go to prison.”
