A nurse from Peterborough with a passion for Harley Davidson motorbikes is to take to the road in bid to help ease the suffering of cancer patients.

Sandra Beeton (45), of Mayor’s Walk, will ride a gruelling 2,650 miles in just seven days across the UK, Ireland and Jersey to visit every Harley Davidson dealership in aid of Cancer Research UK.

Miss Beeton, a community nurse of 25 years and has worked at Peterborough District Hospital, will visit 32 dealerships and hopes to raise £7,500 for Cancer Research UK’s laboratories at Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

She said that staff are using genetic research techniques to find tailor made treatments, specific to a patient’s form of cancer to combat side effects and improve outcomes.

She said: “What this will do is reduce the amount of related illness and side effects that many patients suffer with then having any form of treatments.”

Miss Beeton, who rides a Road King motorbike, begins her journey on Sunday travelling to Edinburgh visiting seven dealerships.

She will have covered daily rides of up to 492 miles and 10 hours in length as she goes between Best Western Hotels, which is supporting the charitable endeavour as part of a long-standing link with Harley Davidson.

She said: “I just hope it’s not raining day in and day out as I’m doing it.”

Miss Beeton began riding 14 years ago and is now on her third Harley Davidson.

She attributes her love of motorcycles to the time she spent riding horses as a child, allowing her to experience the same openness to the elements - but without the hassle.

She said: “You don’t have to muck it out every day, feed it every day or ride it every day.”

Miss Beeton typically travels by car for work, but has on occasion arrived for engagements on her bike.

She said: “I would turn up with leathers on over my uniform. It’s not quite what they expected.”

Steve Loxton, a principal dealer for Harley Davidson, said: “We’re really proud to be supporting Sandra and raising money for such a worthwhile charity. Cancer Research is a charity that is particularly close to our hearts.”
