Activists from Grassroots Out gave out leaflets in towns across the country on Saturday as the battle for votes in the June 23 poll intensifies.

Campaigners were on the streets in Downham Market, Haverhill, Peterborough and Thetford during the day while similar exercises were also planned in Sudbury and Wisbech.

Colin Rose, a UKIP representative who contested the Upwell and Delph ward at last year’s West Norfolk Council elections, was among a group of campaigners meeting shoppers in Downham Market.

He said: “I’m not here to put forward the views of UKIP. GO is a cross-party group.

Ahead of the event, GO campaign leaders claimed they would have 3,500 activists in 300 locations across the country and were expecting to give out a million leaflets to voters.

Officials say the event is the first of several they plan to stage between now and polling day in order to press their case for a Brexit.

And, while supporters of the case to remain in the EU say their opponents have yet to make an economic case for exit, Mr Rose says many voters do not like what the organisation has become.

He said: “We signed up to a free trade agreement, not a full European Union.”
