Gladys turns 100 with the birthday girls

Former Land Army girl Gladys Elam celebrated her 100th birthday at her Stanground home with her daughter and great-granddaughter who were celebrating their birthdays too.

Gladys was born in Leeds and worked in a Burton factory making munitions before joining the Land Army during World War 2, based in Sutton St Edmunds.

She married husband Bill in 1945, while he was in the Home Guard, and had two children - Eric and Carole Hudson, who celebrated her 70th last week.

She moved to Peterborough in 1980 and has been a widow since Eric died 10 years ago.

Carole, who lives next door to her mum, described Gladys as “independent” and “a typical outspoken Yorkshirewoman with a wonderful personality.”
